So, I saw X-Men 3 today. Remind me never to go into the 17:15 showing again. Kids and cinema = don't mix.
First of all : Spuperman Returns trailer! Yay! I so want to see that movie now.
Now about X3. Not a happy movie at all. I mean, the other two weren't exactly cheery, either, but this was mostly depressing in a non-meaningful way. Not that I hated it. It was watchable and not at all the horrible mess some people feared it would be, but the more I think about it, the less I like it.
1) WTF ending?! I thought this was the last movie. I'm glad that the 'cure' apparently wasn't permanent, because de-powered Erik and Mystique? Would have been the most depressing thing about the movie. (Although I thought that last scene would play out with Erik and Raven meeting as humans, but both of them getting their powers back is a hell of a lot better.)
2) The deaths. I was spoiled on Charles and Scott. Scott's death was expectedly pointless. Charles, see below. Jean's death made me glad, because letting her live would have been really cruel.
3)Charles. The whole thing with Charles and Jean and the Phoenix made me really uncomfortable. Movie!Charles didn't seem like the guy who'd do a thing like that without Jean's consent (or at least, without her knowing about it). Apparently his ethics weren't as great as the first two movies made it seem and it's kinda fitting that this should be the cause of his death, but the movie handled it badly. Also, for someone whose main role was the idealist leader, his death was extremely private and non-symbolic, as well as pointless. The burial scene was kinda weak, too, as was the fall-out of his death. The only person who really conveyed a sense of loss was (of course) Magneto.
4)Erik. Well, Ian McKellen rocks, even with bad dialogue. (But god, was it ever bad). And I was amused that being de-powered depressed him so much (I expected him to ask somebody to kill him, actually) that he wore really ugly retired people clothing. And played chess. Alone.
I liked his scenes with Charles, Jean and Pyro, but his lack of shock or compassion at Mystique's de-powering was shocking. His treatment of Jean seemed *very* manipulative to me, probably since he was afraid of her and I don't quite get why she fought on his side after killing Charles.
5)The billions of new characters. I liked Warren, although he was only a plot device... actually he wasn't even that. Well. I loved the Leech kid. His scenes were some of the few that actually made me respond emotionally to the movie. Kitty - why? Colossus - why? I hate Juggernaut in every incarnation I've seen of him, so no surprise there. Hank... was kinda boring and non-charming, his dialogue with Logan completely pastede on.
6) Mystique rocked. Yes, even her betrayal of Magneto.
7)Logan and Marie both completely lost any appeal they had in X1.
8) Bobby and Pyro should have had more time for their conflict, although I liked the short scenes they had.
9) What happened to Nightcrawler? *misses him*
10) I-have-lines-now!Storm : was okay, but still boring as hell.
11) The cure and Phoenix storylines had nothing to do with each other and there was zero reason to combine them. Separately, they weren't bad stories and the movie should have taken the effort to flesh out one of them and I think it would have been much better.
12) Most of the movie was surprisingly lacking action and explosions, instead concentrating on the characters and plot. It made up for it in the final confrontation by serving us a whole lot completely pointless violence. I mean, what's wrong with a plan, Magneto? You have all these people with amazing powers but the best you come up with is 'we go in and destroy them and sacrifice a whole lot of unimportant people in the process'? I expect better from a chess fanatic.
This was a movie with a whole lot of bad stuff happening kinda pointlessly to the characters. No one was happier in the end than at the beginning, except perhaps for Warren and Leech (and maybe Rogue, but she won't be for long if the 'cure' doesn't hold.) Main characters died meaninglessly. No one really showed any character development. I still didn't hate it, though and I'm sure at least some good fanfic will come of fixing that mess :D
