Huh, I haven't posted a lot this month, have I? Been busy, mostly, and not doing a lot of fannish things, but today I have something fannish to post about: my thoughts re about Legend of Korra, the Avatar: the Last Airbender spin-off.

spoilers for the entire first season of Korra )

Well, that's one way to spend a Sunday... I walked the dog for one and a half hours... and watched 13 episodes of Avatar: the last Airbender! I'm now caught up. (I skipped a couple of episodes from all three books, but I think I saw all the important stuff.) I might have to cede the title of Best Animated Series Ever to this show. It used to go to JLU, but, yeah. This is just as good, but way more imaginative and pretty and funny.

Favourite Characters:
#1 Uncle Iroh. Just, wow. As old mentors go, he's on par with Dumbledore and Gandalf (but more like Gandalf, really.), wise and wickedly funny and just a bit tragic.
#2 Zuko. He just speaks to my inner 10 year old who loves the mysterious dark but redeemable guys. Except, Zuko isn't exactly mysterious. He makes me laugh most of the time. I think I ship Zuko/his issues *g*
#3 Toph, who gets this place for yelling at Katara and being generally awesome.
#4 Aang. You only get this kind of hero in Asian style stories, somehow. He has both his childish and his wise moments. And, well, he's basically a mix between the Dalai Lama and Son Goku*. And that's awesome.
#5 Sokka. Comic relief guy who's actually funny AND smart.

Least Favourite Characters:
# 1 Katara. She was perfectly okay in Book 1. And then she DID become a Lana. Argh.
# 2 Azula. I feel conflicted here. On the one hand, Azula is kickass, smart, unrepentantly evil and incredibly competent for a villain. But on the other hand... she's just a bit too perfect and inhuman. "The Beach" tried to give her a weakness (flirting with boys/having fun) but it didn't really work for me.

Favourite Stories:
#1 The whole Ba Sing Se storyline with the conspiracy. Brainwashing and intrigue in a cartoon! Whee! I think the one moment where I was really wowed by Azula was her battle of wills with Long Feng.
#2 "The Beach". Okay. Nothing funnier than Azula, Zuko, Ty Lee and Mai having a beach holiday. And Zuko dating Mai was non-stop hilarity.
#3 "The Blue Spirit" The final scene between Zuko and Aang!
#4 "The Firelord and the Avatar". LOL! It's Dumbledore and Grindelwald all over again! I saw this coming a mile away and it was just as slashy as one could hope.
#5 The Rest. I loved every single episode I've seen.

My icon, and the Dancing Dragon thing Aang and Zuko do really reminded me of that one Neon Genesis Evangelion** episode where Shinji and Asuka have to dance. But see how pretty the animation is?

*Yes, I watched Dragon Ball Z.
*Yes, I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion. Which is actually a good anime, but WEIRD and GORY. It used to be my favourite anime.
