Watching "Invasion of Time", which is my favourite Four serial. Rodan! Borusa! K9! Gallifrey! But most of all, Leela ♥

I first saw Invasion before I knew the Gallifrey audio series and loved it then, but I love it even more now. It's the closest TV!Gallifrey has ever come to being like it's audio counterpart: political shenanigans, randomly dying guardsmen, K9 being badass and using the matrix, treachery, undignified running in the panopticon, technological Mcguffins, hypnosis, rocking Time Ladies (Rodan is such a proto-Romana) and of course Leela being BEST. I haven't seen all of Leela's serials, but apart from her marrying Andred* rather than Rodan, she's perfect in this serial, bossing around Time Lords and slaying Sontarans and invading the Citadel with an army of ten savages and a Time Lady

And Four, oh, I do love Four a bit in this serial. He has an art collection his ancillary power station. He gets lost in his own TARDIS. He's finally putting that giant brain to use - I think to love Four, I need him to be suitably epic and have massively byzantine plans and NOT BE BORED (basically, I need Four to be Seven, only in a Four-ish way). I'm not sure if TL intelligence varies with regenerations, but if so, Four is the cleverest.

Borusa is also terribly smooth in this serial, making me sad that he goes crazy in Five Doctors. He and Four are a lovely together because Borusa is in turns fond and in awe, and he's the closest TV Who ever gives us to a parental figure for the Doctor.

That said, I also like "City of Death" very much now, so that I think officially makes Four more loved than Seven**. Though in City I was more impressed with Romana II than Four.

*Andred in Invasion is a) surprisingly pretty, b) hilariously brave yet useless and c) not deserving of Leela. Which I'm glad the Gallifrey audios seem to have recognized, because while they respect Leela's love for Andred, they mostly have Andred making BAD choices with good intentions. Rodan, otoh, builds the most powerful Time Lord weapon under hypnosis and sasses Four and will even go outside for Leela.

**There are two Seven serials that I genuinely like: Remembrance and Survival. Four on the other hand now has Deadly Assassin, Invasion of Time, City of Death, Robots of Death and Logopolis, with Keeper of Traken, Androids of Tara and Planet of Evil also being quite good.

…Marry me, please. I've actually seen this serial on a lot of "worst of" lists, and every time I do I wanna punch somebody.

YES, YES, AND YES. I do not grok people who are all like, "Time Lords as cosmic bureaucrats = le yawn!" It makes a brilliantly rich ground for plots, and it makes so goddamned much sense.

Borusa is also terribly smooth in this serial, making me sad that he goes crazy in Five Doctors. He and Four are a lovely together because Borusa is in turns fond and in awe, and he's the closest TV Who ever gives us to a parental figure for the Doctor.

THIS IS THE ONLY TRUE BORUSA. Seriously, 5Docs is bullshit. I have elaborate fanwank to make that whole sloppy-ass piece of writing go away like it should.

Which Leela serials have you seen? The Sunmakers and Fendahl are also v. v. good. And of course Face of Evil is the best one of all. You have seen it, Y/N?

Oh, yes, I meant Face, not Planet of Evil (too many evils), so I have seen it and like it. Thanks for the recs for Sunmakers and Fendahl, because other than the one's I've mentioned I've only tried to watch Talons of Weng-Chiang which I didn't love at all.

Invasion of Time on a Worst of list is like not loving Jo Grant! Also, cosmic bureaucrats is the only way Time Lords work: a civilisation that old and powerful yet not either a) ruling the cosmos with an iron fist or b) ascended into higher beings would have to have a strong inclination towards stagnation and a lack of imagination. (Though their interior decoration in Invasion does look like it was created by overly enthusiastic kindergartners in places...)

Poor Borusa was too cool for Gallifrey. He probably went mad out of boredom - should have become a renegade instead. He's not technically dead though, just trapped in Rassilon's tomb, so he could still get some sort of happy ending.

I've been staring at this post for days trying to find something more intelligent to say than "YES" or "Invasion is Love" but...that is really what I have to say. It is a fabulous serial, and you've put your finger on all the many reasons why.
