Went to Games Soc today again (I didn't go for a couple of weeks at the end of last term because I was invariably busy or tired) and this time played in an all girls group (just three players... there aren't many girls). It was much nicer than playing with the guys from this society, but it might just be that I'm better at small groups - when there are lots of people talking all at once, even in chat, I usually go quiet after a while because I'm finding it really hard to properly participate in conversation. It's even worse when there's music and drinks and background noises - I can't follow everything that's being said, it overwhelms me, and then I get shy. Though it doesn't happen at home, even when we're seven or eight people playing... I think the sad truth is that I'm not as comfortable speaking English as I thought I was, particularly among fast-talking, in-joking geeks. I'm totally fine in academic or one-on-one situations, but then, those are *easier*.

Also, a question: my laptop screen keeps flickering (with a sort of buzzing noise like a mosquito) and then switching into what looks like energy saving mode - dark, but the image is still there, just barely visible. I've discovered that apparently when I bend the screen back at a wide angle, it doesn't do this anymore. It does it no matter what energy settings I use or whether I use it on battery or plugged-in. My best guess is that there's something wrong between the connection between the lower part of the laptop and the screen... would this be an expensive to repair issue?

I'm annoyed because I didn't bang mine, or drop it, or handle it roughly - I always transport it very carefully, and usually just use it on my desk or my lap... Sony just sucks.

My warranty, oh sad irony, ran out last week.

It surprised me how hard geeks can be to socialize with, I never had that problem before. But unlike other people, geeks demand a very high level of common knowledge and, surprisingly, wit.
