I'm terminally bored and this seems like a nice, navel-gazing meme (even though I haven't posted a lot of fanfic in a while, I still identify as a writer, since I am, in fact, writing, just not finishing anything.)

The Fanfic Writer's Meme:

Keyboard or biro?
Keyboard. Biro is just for travel, or late night inspiration and I rarely actually transcribe what I've written.

Beta or no Beta
I shamefully admit that if I didn't know it'll be better with a beta, I'd write without one. Even though it can be fun, it's still a lot more work to write with a beta and I have a hard time approaching new betas in new fandoms. Only three of my fanfics have ever been betaed, which is doubly shameful since English is my second language.

Plot?
Necessary. It can be a minimum, it can be there just as backstory, but there has to be plot.

Title?
My titles are either boring, a quote from the fic, or rather random. I don't think I have a single *really* good title.

Smushy or Smutty
Smutty, if anything, although most of the time any kind of romance/erotica takes some effort because I tend towards gen. Although I've written some angsty/smushy stuff. I think my single lonely X-Men fic counts here, as well as my Lord of the Flies epic "I Am Here".

Summary
Mostly matter of fact, I have a hard time coming up with clever stuff. But it's not as hard as choosing a title.

Funniest fic?
No idea. No, wait! "My Magnificient Plan", the HP crackfic that contains every single HP conspiracy theory ever. It still makes me crack a smile even though it's silly.

Most popular fic
On ff.net: "I Am Here" (Lord of the Flies, Jack/Ralph), which will always occupy a special place in my heart because it was my first successful, long, finished story. On muggle.net fanfiction: "River Styx" (HP, Snape, Lupin, McGonagall, Regulus Black), which was a featured story, OMG. (Man was I ever proud ;-D)

Most fun to write
My Angel Sanctuary (Manga) fic, because it was a more innocent time ;P. And that one time I came home from a party and wrote a fic about being stoned (after a party) until the next morning. Good times. Also, "I am Here" because of the overwhelming amount of feedback.

Best and Worst
Excepting my early, German fic, it's hard to say which is the worst, since I have apparently deleted some of my worse ff.net fic. The remaining worst is "Why me? Mad Tea Party!", a sugar high Angel Sanctuary in best ff.net tradition. The best has several contenders... "Foolish Man" (Angel Sanctuary, Lucifer, Belial, God) because my mother liked it, which is, like, the highest praise ever. The first chapters of "Island" (Brave New World, Bernard/Helmholtz). "River Styx", because it has the best narrative, and the best beginning and ending, and because I wrote myself out of some very tight corners. And also, because it has insane!Regulus chained up in a bathtub.... and wow, I just realised where I stole that image from. Did I do that consciously? *wonders*

Strengths?
Plot and dialogue. At the moment I have the horrible problem that I have plotbunnies like never before, but I lack the ability to turn them into fleshed out stories. Different POV's.

Weaknesses?
Humour. Snarky, witty characters. Characters with very distinctive speech patterns, because I have a hard time emulating them in English, especially if they contain lots of slang - see Buffy. Narrative, sometimes, and telling rather than showing. Writing a fic in just one POV. Usage of literary devices like motives and themes.
High dependency on feedback, I think, too.

Dirty Little Secrets
Um. I sometimes consciously write what I think will be well-received (for example, making a story slash that would just as happily have remained gen). The number of WIPs/unfinished fics on my harddrive is nearing a hundred. I almost never write female characters, even though *a lot* of my fic is gen.
