I wonder if this is just me, or some strange fanfic-writer inferiority complex that is a larger phenomenon:

Whenever I write something long and plotty, particularly if there are action scenes, or scenes with just a single character in them, I wonder if people will find this boring. Apparently I assume that fanfic readers are there for character interaction (be it dialogue or porn) only. Obviously this is not the case with fiction in general, where people will write for pages about how X slew the dragon or contemplated the relative merits of democracy vs. dictatorship. But fanfiction readers usually aren't there for the dragon slaying, aren't they? Particularly pairing-orientied readers will primarily expect pairing related writing.

This was brought on by the fact that I'm now at 5000+ words of Post-EoT fic and it consists almost completely of the Master aimlessly running around on Gallifrey and killing dudes and doing stuff. The Doctor has only just shown up. Usually, I tend to write very differently - with a much smaller cast of characters and concentrating only on their interaction (quite a lot of my D/M fics only *have* two characters in them). Although there are exceptions - some of my DCU fic had tons of characters, like Devil's Deal or Seven Soldiers of Victory, and all of my HP fic was long, plotty and completely gen with the occasional sliver of pre-slash. So apparently this is only a Doctor Who phenomenon, and I think it's not just me. A lot of the writers in the Doctor/Master niche tend to write chamber plays. Why?
