I had the same problem with this site and switched to a site called www.behindthename.com ages ago.
I haven't noticed anything exceedingly stupid with Western European names and a couple of the Chinese names turned out to be pretty accurate. The site does have a high number of archaic and cross-culture names as usual, but at least the latter are clearly marked as belonging to multiple languages.
The site also has a sister site for surnames: surnames.behindthename.com
