WOW.
First Smallville episode I watched in more than a year, and wow. Wow. It was, especially in the last half hour, a constant fangasm for someone who loves the wider DCU verse. I cannot believe how much random canon they managed to cram into these two hours.
Let me count the awesome:
- Martian Manhunter, complete with cookies and superpowers and almost a costume.
- Sylvester Pemberton is, like, my least favourite Starman, but he looked a lot like Jack Knight in this. Leather jacket and crazy shirt!
- Courtney. I wasn't convinced until she put on the costume, but as soon as she did, she WAS Stargirl. So perfect. And a sweet scene with Chloe, too.
- Hawkman. Also perfect. And for the first time ever, SV!Ollie is like real Ollie when he riles up Hawkman. YAY. And Shayera's helmet looked really, really pretty.
- Random not-appearing-in-this-episode cameos by Alan, Jay, Ted, and MA FREAKING HUNKEL. I especially loved what little we saw of Jay's casting.
- Crazy!Doctor Fate. His helmet looked very much like the plastic it was, but otherwise, also perfect. They killed him, but it never sticks with Doctor Fates.
- ICICLE. I cannot believe they had my favourite JSA villain in this. Okay, so their Icicle sucked and Amanda Waller probably killed him (but my personal canon is that she shot him in the foot just to show that she can and he is going to grow a beard and become cool), but Icicle just being there was cool. And they even told his sad backstory!
- Checkmate. And Amanda Waller. And the Suicide Squad. This is like my own personal episode of favourite DC comics. The Wall was badass enough, so I'm satisfied.
- Chloe and a hint at fate. Crazy Chloe isn't cool - but Doctor Fate Chloe would be! After all, Fate only said they share a fate... mostly, though, Chloe was cool in this ep. Unlike some other old Smallville characters, she actually fits right into this superhero business.
- Gratuitious mentions of Lex!
- And I missed this, but apparently there's Kandor now? And the Legion?
And now we come to the one, sad thing that doesn't make me squee. Clark. And Lois. Supposedly, they're the main characters of this show, and that's why I won't go back to watching SV regularly. Lois is still my least favourite DC character. She's just boring, and SV!Lois with her "I'm so smart and awesome and witty!" attitude is one of her more annoying incarnations. Clark, on the other hand, just doesn't convince me as the hero they're trying to sell him as. He's what's wrong with the proto Justice League, because he isn't a leader (he says he trusts them, but I don't buy it), and he isn't ever going to make this team a family. Chloe might make the League work, or Ollie, or John Jones, but not our Smallville Clark.
Okay, maybe I have a small grudge against Smallville.
But if this were the JSA Show, or the Green Arrow Show or the Watchtower Show, I would totally adore it to bits and watch every episode.
