Today I'm twenty years old and that is kind of weird, but not nearly as interesting as I thought it would be when I was, say, twelve. (The reason for which is of course that when I was twelve, I would suddenly have been eight years older but now I'm just a day older than yesterday.)
It's like the stupid year 2000 or handhelds or changing climate - ten years ago these things may have sounded like 'woah, science-fiction!!' but then they come by slowly and you adjust and once they're there it isn't exciting at all. Which is really disappointing because imagine all the great or not so great things that will happen during my lifetime that would seem totally overwhelming if they happened now but will just be boring facts of life when they happen... that's sad.

Also, I kind of hate my birthday even more with each year that passes. When I was younger presents seemed important, now I would be perfectly happy with just a card or some good wishes, or maybe something small and thoughtful, something that shows that the giver actually knows me. But each year I get stuff from my parents that just shows me that obviously they have no idea what I like. And I, on the other hand, am completely unable to be a gracious gift receiver, so it's just awkward. Christmas is okay in that aspect, everbody in my family hates Christmas to some extent, but I'm the only person who hates my birthday!

I wish there was a holiday, just one, that actually felt like there's something to celebrate. But I have the nagging suspicion that the ability to celebrate is a part that was neglected in my education.

...

Okay, the more I think about it, the weirder it sounds. 20. Me. Huh.
