It's so classically romantic - all these diverse characters on an odyssey together.

It felt a bit like writing a high fantasy quest story to me, and a bit like roleplaying at the beginning of an adventure when you have to gather your party. That's why I said it was self-indulgent - I had a lot of fun writing it, but wasn't sure anyone else would.
