Who episodes meme

So yesterday I shocked certain people by admitting my somewhat spotty knowledge of (and disinterest in) Fourth Doctor episodes, and also by confusing Genesis of the Daleks with Destiny of the Daleks: a mistake of such grave proportions that only a Who geek could possibly understand.

TVM
(And Eight is definitely my most complete audio Doctor)

NINE

S1

TEN

haven't seen Love & Monsters and Fear Her

ELEVEN

S5 & Christmas Special

So as you can see, my only complete Doctors are Eight, Nine and Eleven. The only reason I'm doing so well on Two is that I LOVE burninated episodes on audio, I find the long serials of Classic Who more more palatable in that format - as audios, or when watched with other people. And I'm very much not a completist: it doesn't bother me not to have watched those two Ten eps, or the few Three episodes I haven't seen, even though I love Three.

But of course I you see something I HAVE to see on this list, tell me!

Wow, I had repressed all of this to protect myself and now I'm shocked again! Freudian!fail.

Poor you :P

[identity profile] x-los.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
WAIT WARRIORS OF THE DEEP?! THE HELL!!

[identity profile] x-los.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think of it as not a fantastic ep, but a sort of poignant moment in Five characterization, and am surprised you haven't seen it because I think it's generally regarded as a Big Five Ep (and while the tenor of my interest in it strays from Fan Boy Orthodoxy, I don't disagree).

It's okay, I'm behind on Four too. Though. The Pirate Planet is Most Excellent. Think of the parrots!

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think The Pirate Planet was literally a planet with pirates. I don't know why - Who titles are usually quite literal. Unless it's something or other of Evil, then it's just shameless exaggeration.

[personal profile] semantics 2011-01-19 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the planet is not a planet of pirates as a planet where Piracy is its Hat. So in that sense it is slightly misleading but, I feel, still true, in its way.

[identity profile] x-los.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well we're doing a big Four community watchalong Saturday night to aid in the refformation of lost souls. Hopefully not JUST Nadja, but even if so, the intervention will have been worth it!!

It takes a real spirit of altruism to devote yourself to these sorts of good works.

I am shocked, SHOCKED at the lack of Four seen. CITY OF DEATH? Dude! But also, Ribos and Pirate Planet and if you watch just one maybe Androids of Tara.

Tots rec listening to Fury from the Deep and The Macra Terror, both I think are smashing.

Your missing Three is Perfectly Sensible.

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Finally I have found something with which to shock people! My life was lacking scandal, but no more :D

My ignorance of City of Death and Androids of Tara will soon be remedied, at least.

City of Death is indeed lovely, but I am generally a bit disinterested in Four also. (I think it might have a lot to do with some early imprinting on Tom Baker as Puddleglum in the BBC Silver Chair, so he is very much not my Iconic Doctor because he's already being my Iconic Marshwiggle.) Not being a completist is probably the only sane way to go about Doctor Who, anyway.

Also: never, ever seen Love & Monsters. Seriously. Just don't.

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had gathered that Love & Monsters was a bit dire, and since I don't particularly enjoy S2 anyway...

[identity profile] gritsinmisery.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Pyramids of Mars is a Four must-see. Sarah Jane totally rocks in that one -- uses a shotgun while wearing a Gibson Girl style dress. Action!SJ, rather than shrieking!SJ.

Who-trivia: the same actor did both Sutek in Pyramids and The Beast in The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit (Ten, nu-Who season 2.) I made a macro back in my macro-making period (clicky to embiggen):
Gabriel Woolf

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so that's the one where Sarah Jane in the dress with the gun is from! Known that screencap since forever...
ext_23799: (four finds this curious)

[identity profile] aralias.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
i see that it is not just me and erin who are shocked and surprised at this :p
ext_23799: (five says it isn't cricket)

[identity profile] aralias.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
although erin's wrong, and if you can stay away from warriors of the deep you should, because it is one of the worst episodes of who there is. it's notable for that, but not anything else. just imagine davison saying 'there should have been another way' while strapped into the bondage chair from end of time and you will have watched the only memorable bit without having to have actually watched it.

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Now that 'there should have been another way' is so easy to audio-visualize that I wonder whether I've actually seen the scene. Or maybe it's just a Five thing to say.

I am saddened that you haven't finished Carnival of Monsters, but only because I am a bit obsessed with it. And I liked Love and Monsters, but I realize that kind of marks me out as a person who shouldn't be giving Who recs.

(But seriously, Carnival of Monsters. The costumes alone!)

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I've actually seen the first part of Carnival twice and still haven't made it through. And I couldn't even tell you why... anyway, I might just save it for a time when want to watch fresh Three - so I don't have to watch Death to the Daleks, which everyone seems to hate.

[identity profile] roachpatrol.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is deeply, deeply cheesy and involves far too much mid-eighties softcore hip-hop, but it has an absolutely beautiful cast of one-off characters and Seven is a BAMF, and at the end he and Ace BLOW EVERYTHING UP. I really like it.

[identity profile] roachpatrol.livejournal.com 2011-01-19 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Also the Happiness Patrol is likewise very cheesy-- one of the villains is a robot covered in candy-- but the Doctor is really sweet and Ace has some great moments of ass-kickery. Also I think there is a moment where Seven steals a golf cart and goes smugly whizzing around corridors in it, though that might have been Paradise Towers. Which I also love. (Paradise Towers has zombies and cannibals and gangs of psycho cheerleaders and Mel not being incredibly obnoxious for once and everyone but me seems to hate it. I need more people on my side.)

[identity profile] bagheera-san.livejournal.com 2011-01-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now you make all of that sound very awesome - particularly mid-eighties soft-core hip-hop, because I always love Eighties Who music particularly when it's hilarious. Also, Mel not being incredibly obnoxious, I thought that was one possible in The One Doctor.
