A highly reccommended movie, if you haven't already seen it:

The Lives of Others/Das Leben der Anderen (2006)

This is a German movie, but it won BAFTAs and stuff, so even the English-speaking parts of my flist might have heard of it. It's about surveillance, censorship and wire-tapping practices in the German Democratic Republic, except I think that the historical context is almost incidental (if highly interesting) because really it's a film about loneliness, vicarious pleasure, and finding a conscience - the main character is an East German secret police agent who falls in love with a pair of suspected dissidents (an actress and a playwright) he's spying on. The acting, particularly of the male lead, is brilliant and understated and extremely moving.
