Huh, I haven't posted a lot this month, have I? Been busy, mostly, and not doing a lot of fannish things, but today I have something fannish to post about: my thoughts re about Legend of Korra, the Avatar: the Last Airbender spin-off.

spoilers for the entire first season of Korra )

Just generally I wish New Who would stop trying to pander to its audience (creepy monsters! strong women! little kids! we KNOW you like this stuff) so much and just tell genuinely good stories. I know the temptation - sometimes I sit down and think, "I'm going to write a really popular story that everyone in fandom will love, because fandom loves Ten/Simm and BDSM and OOC fluff and double rainbows and the Doctor saying "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" a lot" but it never works because this isn't how you tell a good story. Or let me put it this way: even if you REALLY love chocolate, you can't bake a chocolate cake without flour and eggs and salt and baking powder to keep it all together and make it rise.

The finale: whatever. I guess when it comes to Moffat Who I'll just have to enjoy the episodes not written by him and ignore the rest as ridiculous nonsense caused by irresponsible time-travelling that will all be non-canonical once another showrunner takes over.

Week two of teacher internship is over. Taught my first German lesson (on narrators and text interpretation at nearly A-Level level) and it went well. I have no problem whatsoever teaching older pupils (about 17-18), in fact, I enjoy it. My one problem is that I can't stop myself from smiling or laughing when they do silly stuff, so I undermine my own authority.

Next week I have to teach three lessons and I can already tell that nothing eats time like lesson preparation. Also, who the hell thinks its a good idea to teach grammar to adult native speakers who don't plan on a career in writing?

Yesterday's Who episode was mostly cute, but not as good as the last two. Matt Smith and Matt Smith's Wonderful Coat were awesome, however. Seriously, that coat deserves a BAFTA.

my day

Hiked ten miles (too many of which were steeply uphill) today with my rpg peeps. You might think: wow, how un-nerdy! However, the route we took was the setting of our last Ars Magica campaign, so it was still nerdy, despite sunshine and forest and meadows and stuff.

"Night Terrors" bored me a bit, it wasn't bad, but the solution was a bit pat and the scary things scared me a lot less than the mundane things in this episode.

Next week's ep looks interesting, though, looking forward to that!
